Event details

The Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi volcano observatory (PVMBG) recorded a short-lived phreatic eruption at 18:25 local time yesterday. A pyroclastic material in the form of country rock and mud was ejected to an approximate height of 400 meters into various directions as visible in the attached video below. A seismic activity accompanied this event lasting about 109 seconds with maximum amplitude of 42.7 mm. The warning bulletin states that phreatic explosions could occur with little to no warning and may affect an area of about 500 m distance from the Sileri crater. Phreatic explosions occur as groundwater comes into contact with hot volcanic rock - not necessarily molten magma which means that no new magma is erupted or is still in the conduit. The last phreatic eruption at the volcano occurred on 1 April 2018.
